SYSTEM, BOUNDARY & UNIVERSE

 

•   SYSTEM: - is a region in space or qty. of matter chosen for thermodynamic analysis.

            Types of system: -

·       OPEN SYSTEM (CONTROL VOLME):-Both Mass transfer & Energy transfer take place.

E.g. Compressor, Turbine.

 

·       CLOSED SYSTEM (CONTROL MASS):-No mass transfer, only energy transfer.

E.g. Piston cylinder

 

·       ISOLATED SYSTEM :- (Closed, M=0), (Rigid, W=0), (Perfectly Insulated, Q=0)

Neither mass nor energy transfer.

E.g.  Universe.

 

•   SURROUNDINGS: - Everything external to the system.

 

•   BOUNDARY: - Separate the system from surroundings.

                        It can be fixed or movable, Real or imaginary.

• UNIVERSE: - System and surroundings together called universe.
